Food Pantry Update
"Feed my sheep" - sounds simple, and in many ways it is. But a lot goes in to getting food into the hands of Jesus and the hungry. We can use your help!
Volunteers take inventory of our pantry before ordering food at an incredible discount from Food Bank RGV. The third Friday of the month, volunteers pick up the food and haul it over to the church where it has to be unloaded and set up for distribution the next day. This takes a lot of effort, so the more able-bodied volunteers on Friday morning, the better!
Saturday mornings, clients line up as early as 5:00 a.m. sometimes, even though we don't distribute until closer to 9:00 a.m. Volunteers arrive by 8:30 a.m. to greet and welcome clients, help hand out numbers, handle hospitality including coffee and other treats, registration and check-in (bilingual ability is helpful but not absolutely required for this), and then folks help distribute each item and others help get groceries out to the clients' cars (often our Boy Scout Troop is great at helping with this part!).
This month we were blessed with a TON of fresh produce as you can see from the pictures above, but that is given to us FREE and not weighed out, so it isn't included in the stats below. Many thanks to all who came to help unload and bag and bag and bag all those tomatoes!
This month's distribution takes place on Saturday, March 17, which means we need help on Friday the 16th, too. Be sure your neighbors know to come for help and to help!

In His Steps Shoe Bank
For over 30 years, Weslaco First UMC has maintained a shoe bank to provide vouchers for new shoes to students in WISD through the parental involvement personnel. In the 2016-2017 school year, 552 pairs of shoes were purchased through our shoe bank.
Donations can be designated for the shoe bank at any time. Each December we make an especial push for donations to bolster the fund before the spring semester starts. This year we added another $1250 through our December drive.
